Troy’s story
Troy* is a student with complex needs & sensory profile who has weekly music sessions at one of our partner schools. At the start of the year, he often declined invitations to join in and rarely engaged with instruments or music facilitators.
Through our regular sessions, Troy’s confidence and engagement have grown significantly, and he’s gradually moved from observing to actively participating.
Troy now independently approaches instruments and technology, explores different sounds and techniques, takes turns with others, and sustains concentration for longer periods. He has also become increasingly confident in vocal activities, using a microphone to contribute during songs.
A key milestone for Troy was when he successfully followed and copied musical cues modelled by the team. In this moment he demonstrated his growing listening skills, awareness, and self-control. He has also begun independently filling in words and phrases during songs, showing increased confidence, communication, and anticipation.
Staff have been surprised by his progress. One TA described a 10 minute period of concentration and turn-taking as something that “made his week,” while another of Troy’s contributions during a song was celebrated as “the highlight of the year.”
Troy’s journey from observer to participant shows the impact of this sustained interaction with specialist music provision. Through music, he has developed confidence, communication skills, sustained attention, and new ways to engage with the people around him.
