Building confidence through music – Andy

Andy [name changed] is an individual with Down syndrome, he has complex needs and is mostly non-verbal. Social interactions often make him anxious.

When Andy first joined the music sessions, he faced several challenges. He played continuously without breaks, and he found it difficult to take instructions. Integrating into the group setting was a struggle.

Over time, Andy has shown remarkable progress in several areas through his participation in the music sessions. His musicianship, enjoyment and engagement have grown immensely. Andy’s listening skills have developed. He now listens to changes in dynamics and is more responsive to the rest of the group when they are playing. His technical ability as a drummer has significantly improved through the development of his playing style with the support of the OmniMusic Facilitators.

Andy has taken on a leadership role by leading the band in ending tracks. He lifts his sticks to cue the rest of the group, demonstrating his leadership in guiding the group’s performance. Andy assists the OmniMusic Facilitators with loading equipment into the room for the session, showing responsibility and initiative. Andy’s confidence has improved when interacting with team members, and he will use some words and gestures when communicating with the team.
